At Greenhouse Music Group, we’re passionate about sparking a love for music in children across Leeds! Music isn’t just fun—it boosts brain development, literacy, and social skills, as research from the University of Queensland shows. Whether your child is ready for music lessons or just starting to explore, these five easy activities will inspire creativity at home, give them musical experiences that will improve their mental health and prepare them for music lessons further down the line. Try them out and see the magic of music unfold!
1. Craft Homemade Instruments
Turn everyday items into musical treasures! As suggested by Queensland’s early childhood experts, try filling plastic bottles with rice or beans to make shaker or use pots as drums. Let your child decorate their creations for extra fun. Let us know any great ideas you have, tag us on Instagram or Facebook with your musical designs!
Why it’s great: Builds creativity and rhythm skills, gives them a positive musical experience and sets the stage for music lessons.
2. Sing and Play with Call-and-Response
Sing a familiar tune like “Twinkle, Twinkle” and have your child echo each line with a silly voice or clap. The University of Queensland highlights how these playful interactions boost literacy and emotional regulation.
Why it’s great: Encourages confidence and listening, skills we nurture at Greenhouse Music Group.

3. Form a Family Band
Grab DIY instruments or toy xylophones and jam together! Assign roles—one sings, another taps a beat. Care for Kids notes that these shared music moments enhance social skills and bonding. Record your “concert” for laughs!
Why it’s great: Mirrors the group workshops at our afterschool music club, fostering teamwork and fun.
4. Explore Online Music Resources
Dive into free online tools like our play-along backing tracks or sites such as Chrome Music Lab, where kids can create melodies or experiment with sounds. These are a great, playful way to spark interest in music technology.
Why it’s great: Modern music has a lot of tech so children need to be interacting with fun production and songwriting tools from a young age.
5. Go on a Sound Scavenger Hunt
On a walk near a park (my personal favourite is Roundhay Park), listen for sounds like birds or traffic. At home, mimic them with voices or instruments. Queensland’s experts say this sharpens listening skills, crucial for musical growth.
Why it’s great: This is especially great for listening skills. I think most parents would be grateful for children that listened that extra little bit! 😄
