One of the most common questions we hear from parents at Greenhouse Music Group is:

“How much should my child really be practicing at home?”

It’s a great question, and one that can make the difference between your child enjoying music for life or dreading it. The good news? Research shows that a healthy, regular practice habit, not endless hours, is what builds skills and confidence.

A recent UK government report on music education highlights that consistent practice and high-quality support at home are key to helping young musicians thrive. But “consistent” doesn’t mean stressful. The right amount of practice depends on your child’s age and stage but keeping it positive is just as important as hitting the right notes.

Here’s our simple age-by-age guide to help you build a routine that works for your family.

Ages 4–6: Keep It Short and Playful

When children are just starting out, especially between four and six years old, the focus should be on nurturing curiosity and enjoyment. For this age group, short and fun sessions are far more effective than forcing long stretches of concentration they’re not ready for yet.

How long is enough? Around five to ten minutes a day is plenty. It may not sound like much, but research shows that feeling supported, safe and engaged in early learning builds the foundation for long-term success.

Parents can make a huge difference by joining in. Sit with your child, sing along, or help them clap a simple rhythm. Most importantly, make it playful! You’re not training a concert pianist overnight, you’re building a love for music.

Ages 7–10: Build the Habit

As children grow into the seven to ten age range, they’re better able to focus and follow instructions. This is the ideal time to introduce more structure, but it should still feel manageable and positive.

A good target is ten to twenty minutes a day, four or five days a week. According to the UK subject report on music, regular practice routines are a strong predictor of musical progress and enjoyment.

One easy way to help your child stick to it is to connect practice to another daily habit, for example, straight after school or before dinner. Many families find that a simple sticker chart or practice diary keeps kids motivated.

Don’t forget to keep the fun alive too! Our YouTube backing tracks are a great way to turn a simple practice session into a mini concert.

Tweens & Teens: Encourage Independence

Older students often have goals like exams, auditions, or performances, which naturally means more practice time. But it’s still important that practice doesn’t feel like punishment, especially during busy school years.

A good aim for tweens and teens is around thirty minutes a day, five to six days a week, but remember that how they practice matters more than just clocking minutes. Short, focused sessions are much better than long, distracted ones.

It really helps if they get to choose some of what they play. Alongside set pieces or scales, let them work on music they actually love. Whether it’s their favourite artist, video game themes or movie soundtracks.

And if they need a boost? Encourage them to play along with our backing tracks as it keeps practice feeling fresh and more like playing real music.

Tips for Parents: Progress, Not Perfection

Supporting your child’s practice doesn’t mean you have to constantly nag them. In fact, research shows that positive encouragement and celebrating small wins are far more effective than strict pressure.

Try to focus on consistency rather than perfection. Five short, relaxed practice sessions are far better than one long, stressful cram the night before a lesson. If your child is very young, sitting with them, even if just for a few minutes, helps a lot. Older children often still appreciate a quick “well done” or “that sounds great”, even if they roll their eyes!

And remember, if you ever feel stuck, our teachers are always on hand to help. We can create a realistic practice plan that fits your family’s routine, your child’s goals, and your child’s personality.
